How to get Proprietary ATI Drivers Running in Ubuntu

Picture of IrvinAfter a few days of looking and trying the same thing over, and over again, I have finally gotten the binary ATI driver running on my Ubuntu 6.10 Dell E510 box.

It turns out that the secret is to do all the things you are normally told, getting the restricted packages, installing fglrx, etc… but the secret is to do it in single user mode. I guess that 6.10 doesn't have a single user mode, so you have to do it in recovery. Just boot up and press escape when you are booting, pick your kernel in console mode. You will be prompted for your password, enter it and follow the instructions on this blog China Doll's Blog About Radeon X600SE on Ubuntu.

China Doll, if you are out there. You are a complete life-saver!
