Why Blog When You Can Base?
With the launch of Google base, I'm not sure at all about who they are taking on. They advertise it as getting a web page for your stuff. They take reference articles, which means that you could technically, and practically upload your entire blog in RSS format so that it would be listed in base. What is really interesting is that you can specify an email address, and what payment types you take.
eBay should most definately worry. They are reeling from financial issues, as well as the purchase of the overhyped skype. Base looks like it could definately take the cake. It gets your stuff listed on Google, and it is super easy to use. That was the first thing that I noticed. I pushed up my RSS field as reference articles, and they were included within a few minutes. There are other things up there like jobs and there are probably personal ads.
Something really cool is that for those who are selling adult type material, there is a check box that allows you to specify that your site, and the link to it contains adult material. I don't know what exactly Google is going to do with this box, if they are going to categorize stuff with that box in some different way, but it is a good idea.
For podcasters and video bloggers, there isn't anything much better. You can push your podcasts up there I'd imagine if they are small enough, and you could push up video files too. Probably if they were too big you could upload a sample. It is sort of like a really refined craigslist. Things expire, it seems that you can set the term. I have no idea how they will filter out spam posts, but I'd assume that since you have to have a Google account to use Base they must have some way. All in all it seems like a pretty cool setup. Check it out if you get the chance.
